Site management makes it fun to come to work. Culture is a mix of old IBMers and the generation of IBMers. Collaborative environment with different departments you can be exposed to.
Tech giant; lots of offerings
balances revenue with periodic layoffs
Big corporate culture in every sense of the term. Showing initiative is not really appreciated unless end result is overwhelming positive. Management does becomes deaf when delivering a negative assessment of a situation and suggested actions.
Technical infrastructure (except for reliance on Lotus Notes)
Lack of company direction, Company goals have no modification based on division dynamics. Micromanagement of tasks, Expense restrictions interfere with accomplishing goals
I worked in GTS for 4 years and experienced a couple of reorgs. The reorg decisions came from higher levels and really do not make sense in the eyes of people who do the daily work. No surprise we keep losing business.
work / life balance
bad business decisions
Parts of the company are still great however there is an over reliance on the matrix structure resulting in bloated management that rarely provides actual leadership. There are brilliant and talented people but often they live in fear of the next reorg eliminating their positions. Reorgs often take place without any apparent regard for how it will impact current customers or future technology requirements. Rather than cut headcount, reskilling and retraining would be less damaging to intellectual capital and organizational knowledge.
Capricious adherence to commissions plan
IBM used to be a great place to work, hire the best and keep the best. Their compensation was in place to match, with bonuses, regular raises and good pension/401k. Over the past decade, that has changed, bonuses have become tiny and raises are non-existent. Employees are now considered as names on a spreadsheet to be moved around with little so no say in there future at the company.

Company makes great effort to ensure employee inclusion on top level leadership decisions and policies. Management is constantly coming up with innovative ways to engage employees and motivate employee personal interest; while at the same time nurturing employee professional growth along the lines of their real passion.
Field Tech for IBM Point of Sales Division. Then helped get rid of my job, unknowingly. By helping co workers with Remote call screening, tips and technical support with action plan for the Field tech.
Really felt involved at work.
close their Point of Sales Division. No Software training left me out in the Cold
The culture at IBM is second to none with technology professionalism, career development, and education. Great pride working at IBM. A staple company that continues to lead and evolve with the times. Can't say that with any other company. Will definitely be around for another 100 years.
Felt like there was no room for growth and you were forever stuck in the support organization. We asked to take on more work, then they cut our pay by 10%. Never got merit increases even when exceeding expectations. Compared to other companies, was severly under paid as was most of my colleagues. Why we all left.
IBM has a lot of potential, but the issue is the leadership holds people back. There are a lot of qualified people that work hard and don't complain. The management there seems to be under-qualified and gossip about those who work hard. Very disappointed.
They will hire you under false pretenses. I was hired as a banker and ended up doing a dual role as a teller. I found this out my first day at the branch. This was totally different from what I interviewed for. The manager was all over the place and the associates at the branch were very unpleasant and there was a lack of team work.
